What changed
Three signals matter more in 2026 than they did three years ago:
- Tag–caption alignment. Your hashtags need to echo the language in your caption, not just the topic.
- Tier mixing. A pack that spans community-sized tags up through trending tags reads as more "natural" to discovery models.
- Refresh cadence. Tags that have been on every post for six months get downweighted — they look like a template, not a signal.
