A working method for spotting flagged tags before they bury your post β and the 18 categories that get hit most.
The short version
If you're skimming: the old hashtag playbook from 2020 β stuff a post with the highest-volume tags you can find β has been quietly dying for two years. Discovery surfaces have shifted, and the platforms now reward relevance density over volume.
What changed
Three signals matter more in 2026 than they did three years ago:
- Tagβcaption alignment. Your hashtags need to echo the language in your caption, not just the topic.
- Tier mixing. A pack that spans community-sized tags up through trending tags reads as more "natural" to discovery models.
- Refresh cadence. Tags that have been on every post for six months get downweighted β they look like a template, not a signal.
How we approach it
For every client pack, our researchers run the same three-pass filter: niche relevance, reach tier balance, and shadow-flag check. The first pass gets the long list; the second balances the tiers; the third strips anything currently flagged.
The right tag in the right caption quietly compounds for months. The wrong tag does nothing β you just don't notice the silence.
What to do this week
Audit your last 10 posts. Count how many tags repeat across all 10. If it's more than five, you're running a template, not a strategy β and the platforms know.
If you'd rather skip the audit, that's literally what we do. See our packs or tell us about your niche.
